OSRIC

Jeremy had the chance to sit down and run a brief game of OSRIC this last weekend ...

About OSRIC

OSRIC, short for Old School Reference and Index Compilation, describes itself as "a compilation of rules for old school-style fantasy gaming...intended to reproduce underlying rules used in the late 1970s to early 1980s" . It is a role-playing game. Although OSRIC never refers to this directly for legal reasons, it is intended to reproduce the rules of the first edition of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, much like otherDungeons & Dragons simulacrums.

The legal basis of the project is that rules may not be copyrighted, only the "artistic presentation" of those rules. OSRIC uses the Open Gaming License and the System Reference Document to create a new artistic presentation of the underlying rules set.

The purpose of OSRIC is to provide publishers with a tool to legally produce gaming materials compatible with the non-copyrightable aspects of the underlying rules set. Gaming materials described as OSRIC-compatible alert potential users those materials may be compatible with the fantasy rules sets of the late 1970s and early 1980s (i.e. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons).

The initial version of OSRIC was released in 2006. The latest version, OSRIC v. 2.2, was released in 2011. The OSRIC rules are free to download from the game's site in PDF form. In June 2009, hard copy versions of the rules became available from the Lulu Print-On-Demand service in 4 versions: hard bound in black and white, hard bound in color, paperback and paperback economy.

OSRIC is now available through Black Blade Publishing for $26 in a hardcover, black & white edition.

Gamer’s Haven Episode 79 – Roll-Playing vs. Role-Playing

In this episode, we all disagree about what roll-playing vs. role-playing is.  In the Three Parter, Ethan forgets what he wants to talk about, Jeremy does a three part PDF review with The Gamer's Cookbook, ... And Our Tummies Growled, and briefly touches on Magic of the Old West, Strongholds I: The Basics, and Bride of Portable Hole, and Nathan talks a bit about Champions Online: Free For All.

Total Running Time on this episode is 94 minutes.

About The Gamer's Cookbook

Gamers have a bad habit of stuffing their faces when they game, and most of what they use for stuffing is junk food. And when they do eat something remotely considered a decent meal, they tend to go for expensive take-out; pizza, hoagies, cheesesteaks, chinese, fast food, etc.

This short cookbook provides you with a small selection inexpensive recipes that most gamers seem to like. Along with being cheap (costing between $0.82 and $3.00 per person to prepare), these are mostly easy to make, if not fast to prepare, with most of them taking less than a half hour to prepare. Best of all, it isn't the greasy, fat-filled, high-calorie dietary nightmare they usually consume.

Just remember, before attempting any of these recipes, make sure you have an appropriately large pot, something along the lines of 12 to 15 quarts. Otherwise, you may find a tendency to end up with a few servings being fed to your stove and counter. These recipes have been taste tested and found suitable for use on all forms of starving artists, underfed college students, tabletop gamers, youth athletic teams, and some small military units.

This product is a test marketing product designed to test the market interest for this sort of product.

One final note. This is written by a US resident and uses ingredients common here in the United States and Canada. Don't foolishly assume any cookbook available online is written according to ingredient availability at your own local grocery store. I have enough bad reviews by residents of other continents angry that they made such an assumption and bought a cookbook they can't use.

About ... And Our Tummies Growled

Being hungry isn?t fun, whether it's a character or a player. Unfortunately, you can?t just say ?I eat my rations? and be done with it. That's where this cookbook comes in.

Getting together with a group of friends to game is just like any other activity - food almost always gets involved. Many game sessions run after work, during some meal time, or you simply like to snack while you play. This cookbook is a collection of recipes the author has used for her own gaming sessions and other casual entertaining. There are 35 recipes, one per page, and many have suggestions for variations on the dish.

All the recipes in ...And Their Tummies Growled are designed to be cooked quickly the day of the game, in a crockpot, or can be done in advance when you have more time. Some of them actually taste better the day after they?re made. None of them require fancy equipment (unless you call a crockpot, food processor or a blender fancy), nor do they have complicated techniques. Additionally, each recipe should cost $3 or less per person, if you buy inexpensive or on sale ingredients.

...And Their Tummies Growled is compatable with Acrobat Reader 4.0, and comes in a zip file containing the recipes and two versions of the cover (one in full color, the other greyscale) in seperate PDF's.

The 10 page demo is compatable with Acrobat Reader 5.0, and contains the greyscale cover, table of contents, introduction and four recipes.

About Strongholds I:  Basics

Why have a stronghold? Your character works hard for his money - plundering tombs, killing things and taking their stuff, accomplishing dangerous feats of derring-do. So why would he spend his money on a building rather than on a shiny new suit of armor or a magical sword?
A stronghold gives you benefits which are designed to be equal to or superior to the equivalent expenditure in arms and equipment. These benefits grant you resources, bonuses, powers, and abilities which directly affect you, and which make your tomb-raiding easier.

Gamer’s Haven Episode 76 – Cooperative Worldbuilding Part 3

We take a a final look at the cooperative worldbuilding system designed by the ClanWebsite.org Dawn of Worlds, a free PDF that can be found here, and finish up the first era.  We take a lot of tangents, as you can see.

Alternatively, if that site was to go away, you can click to download the Dawn of Worlds Cooperative World Creation.

In this episode, we spend some more time on races and promise to move on to something else.

In the Three Parter, Nathan talks a little about what he's into with retro gaming, Jeremy reviews a few PDFs we were sent by EN Publishing and Three Sages Games, and Ethan raves a bit on Misfit Studios.

We end things with some brief random encounters before we let things be.

About EN Publishing

EN Publishing is the publishing arm of EN World.  EN World is a role-playing game news and reviews website, which has grown from the earlier "Eric Noah's Unofficial D&D 3rd Edition News" site (which was active from 1999-2001).

About Three Sages Games

Three Sages Games often offers a different twist to our games in a crowded field of game titles. We value game play over flash and many of our titles are geared for family play. Our partners have over 60 combined years of rules tinkering and game playing that is invested into all our games. We are in the middle of California and seek to expand our base of happy customers beyond our local area by providing quality gaming experiences at reasonable prices. Perhaps we will meet you at a store demo or convention this year.

About Misfit Studios

Misfit Studios is a (currently) small publishing and production company that makes quality products for current game systems. To this end, the company has assembled a fine team of talented people.
