About the Age of Lords

The world is not ruled by kings, but self-proclaimed Lords and their decedents.  Plagued by years of war and Orc invasion, Thallorand is just now beginning to rise up and dust itself off and “excavation” work is cropping up all over the continent keeping the adventurers busy and well paid.

Prior to the war, some Lords decided to send explorers out over the oceans in search of new lands, and new weapons and allies, to help expand their territory.  While the Spider Islands (claimed by the Astron Family) were fruitful, at least at first, the Torrrakk Wastes (claimed by the Jolannd Family) became a fatal mistake.  The Torrrakk Wastes were home to all manner of creature, from Orcs to Ogres, Trolls to Giants, one more ferocious than the next.  Not happy with the invasion, and then attempted colonization, of their lands, the beasts banded together and set out on stolen, and rebuilt, ships with only one goal: invade Thallorand.  The entire East coast was under siege by the invading horde from the Torrrakk Wastes, villages, cities and towns were all laid to ruin by the savages.  Once the word of the invasion began to spread across the continent, the Lords from the Central and West saw this as an opportunity to overthrow the Lords from the East.  But before they could set any plans in motion, their lands came under attack from similar beasts already native to Thallorand.  Sensing the weakness in humankind from years of fighting each other, Kobolds, Goblins and other lesser creatures took their cue from the invasion and rose up against all humans.

It all began in Samdale Port, located in the northeastern coastline.  A small timber village, it was home to Lapcon Mill which imported logs from the southeastern portion of The Great Tundra, as well as processing timber cut locally. The inhabitants of the village were the millwrights and tree-fallers for Lapcon Mill and lived in homes provided by the company.  Unaware and unconcerned for the wars that raged outside their area, the citizens of Samdale Port were given no warning and had no defense against the invading horde.  The entire battle took less than an hour and the only survivors grabbed what provisions they could and rode on horseback to the nearest settlement to warn them.  Within a week’s time, ten more raids occurred along the east coast and, despite any organized resistance, each battle ended with the same fate.

I’ve been doing this podcast for almost four years now, and in that time, we’ve been hosted by the fine guys over at Fist Full of Comics and Games, and then we struck out on our own (mostly due to incorporating and becoming a nonprofit organization) and got hosting with a company called inMotion Hosting.

Their service was said to be good, and their security was top notch …

So, here’s the story on how inMotion Hosting screwed us, hard.

On September 1, 2010, I was working on the site, not an unusual thing.  Then … the site went down, and we got a notice saying that the account holder (i.e., me) needed to contact our host.

Now, this sort of thing had happened before, and it was usually due to some bandwidth spike our site would cause … something about our traffic and various other things.  I followed inMotion’s instructions to the letter each time, and installed a caching program on WordPress that was supposed to stop things like that from happening.

Then, several months went by, and not a peep from them.  There was the occasional instance where the site was slow, or the site went down, but then it was right back up again.

Well, this time, I got the following e-mail:

It appears as though the WP-Supercache may not have installed properly, as the account was suspended for the same reason it was before. One of our system administrators sent an email in regards to the issue. Please read over and respond to that message to get into contact with a system administration team member.

Alternately, you can call and we can patch you through to a system administrator in regards to the issue.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are open 24/7.

So I went on their 24-hour chat support on their website, and was informed by the gentleman on the other side that I needed to call in.  I was beginning to think this situation was rather ridiculous, so I called in …

After bing on hold for 45 minutes, I was informed that inMotion would look into the site issue, and they would call me back.  All the while, I had already sent in a service ticket, sent an e-mail, and all that stuff as well.

Shortly thereafter, I received this e-mail:

This issue is being escalated to a Systems team representative. Our Systems support team will evaluate the issue and notify you of a time frame for resolution dependent on the complexity of the issue. We thank you for your patience.

No big deal.  That’s what I was told, right?  Well, then I got this e-mail:

We have been in communication with you regarding the resource usage of your site, gamershavenpodcast.com. While we have tried to give you some time to resolve the issue, the resources being consumed by the operation of your website are still well outside of what we can safely contain on a shared platform.

As the activity on your site is affecting other customers, we can no longer permit the operation of your site on a shared systems. In order for your account to continue to remain operation in it’s current state System Administration has recommended the upgrade of your account to a Essential dedicated plan, which should meet the needs of your site and allow greater flexibility and control over the platform your website operates on.

We will need to hear back from you immediately if you wish to continue hosting your site with us.

You can either respond to this email stating how you would like to proceed, or you may call us, 24×7 at 888-321-HOST(4678) and ask to speak with a System Administrator. We appreciate your prompt attention to this matter, and we look forward to hearing from you.

So I looked at their website … and this dedicated hosting was to cost me a mere $200 a month.

Being that I can’t pull $200 out of thin air, I cancelled my service, and began to switch things over to GoDaddy.com, who told me plainly that they could handle the site without problems, and, thus far, they have been doing a fine job.

So, for those of you who may be shopping around for webhosting … don’t touch inMotion Hosting with a 10-foot pole, 50-feet of rope (hemp or silk), or even crampons.  Yes.  Even crampons.  According to them, “Unlimited Bandwidth” translates to “Unlimited until we say it’s too much and then we will want to charge you $200 a month to make it really unlimited.”

Anyway now that I’ve gotten that out of my system … here’s the update I was typing up two weeks ago when this whole thing began …
